While Traximus deposes Zanramon, Honeycutt sacrifices himself to upload a computer virus to the Triceraton and Federation fleet. Honeycutt and the Turtles are abducted by the Earth Protection Force, led by Agent Bishop, who has allied with the Federation. After wreaking havoc on the planet, they are convinced to leave by Donatello, who reveals Honeycutt's departure, only for Honeycutt to return to Earth, intending to surrender himself to the Triceratons. So it was a bumpy road to get here, but ‘Back to the Sewer’ was a solid send-off by me, good chuckles and goofiness with a respectably stable season arc, and didn’t feel like the last ditch mind-wipes of the final seasons of the original cartoon. The Triceraton Republic launches a massive invasion of Earth, believing Professor Honeycutt to be hiding on the planet. Lastly, the tons of cameos in the wedding episode feels like an appreciative nod to – as with Turtles Forever – the show’s older fans, as it creates a sense of continuity that I don’t think younger kids would care about. I was surprised / disappointed they didn’t take it there. Shredder for control of Cyber Shredder thing, and overall, the season still did okay with CS’s attempts at crossing over into the real world (resulting in “City Under Siege”, which was appropriately disaster-filled), but… yeah. I’m glad they decided to let Viral go and not have some kind of Viral vs.

And when the Turtles re-meet Cyber Shredder and Khan, I don’t think there’s even any mention of having seen them previously, so womp womp to that. So when the defeat of Viral ends up in her slinking away and eventually creating Cyber Shredder, it seemed like we were sowing the seeds for this near-future scene to pop up again. It’s also when Shredder’s new second-in-command is shown, Master Khan (ye of a stupidly awful face tattoo), who makes some generic future proclamations upon seeing the turtles of “but I defeated you!…” and what not. Prior to this, Viral had taken the boys on a time tour, at one point dropping them into the near future, where there’s an all out war going on between the original Shredder, Utrom Shredder, and Cyber Shredder – which is our first view of the character. The only real failure on season 7, to me, was in not capitalizing on something cool they seemed to set up – the first episode, ‘Tempus Fugit’ has the nifty branching idea of merging Viral… via the, eh, internet – with a digital backup of Utrom Shredder, making ‘Cyber Shredder’ (who appears to be all Shredder by that point, with Viral powers). But then we get ‘Super Power Struggle,’ which is totally out of context but is a fun Raph / Mike story (although it shows no character growth from being snotty teens) with the always pulpy fun Justice Force, and the MMORPG “SuperQuest” is actually a lot of fun without trying to be too winky-wink about things. And “The Engagement Ring” – Casey proposes with a cursed ring, whoops – is just sorta old-school antics, somewhat out of place in the otherwise focused season.

Serling’s bungled attempt to get back home in “Incredible Shrinking Serling” seems like testing the waters for the Turtle Tots (another proposed season 7 focus) and the robot was never a favorite character, so him as an episode centerpiece is a bit taxing, though the time travel wraparound is always fun.

also embarrassing.) The decision to give the turtles pupils in order to bring the look further in line with the TMNT movie isn’t a bad thing, they just go a little puppy dog with them (particularly Donny) and so at times the vibe just doesn’t fit.Īs usual there are a couple one-off tales that do or don’t work. The re-done theme song is just as embarrassing as the Fast Forward one, and the cyber-suits equally far away from the show’s initial shadowy look as the future suits. The dude at TMNT Entity didn’t seem to like this season (I can’t tell if he was referencing the whole season or only aspects of it), but I think it was a nice final attempt at getting the show back in line, with a very Peter Laird-ish fake sci-fi season arc combined with a pleasant buildup to the show closer (not counting the Monster Mayhem bonus ep) of Casey and April’s wedding.
